Q1 Could you tell us what's a highlight of your recent design career?
In 2005 Steel Couture was reviewed by Daily Candy..... I think I received more web orders in one day than I'd ever gotten in a year. That nod led to lots of publicity, wholesale clients and retail customers that still order from me now.

Q2 What are the special qualities of your design?
I work in a unique medium and have always had an eye for balance. Pair that with distinctive findings and you can be sure you will be wearing an original piece.

Q3 What are you wearing this spring?
Maternity clothes... while chasing a two-year old.

Q4 What inspires you to design?
Brooklyn's industrial cityscapes, urban architecture, repetitions in nature, and my raw materials.

Q5 Could you tell us about your next collection, any future plans?
My latest collection is called Structure and it's really about balance and weight.... the aesthetic is slightly more delicate than my other most recent work.... it's all about form and I have introduced a few new silhouettes that I haven't seen designers working with. I hope to expand this collection in the future.

Lisa got her start in 1997 designing costumes made from chainmail, the intricately woven armor traditionally used on medieval battlefields. Shakespearean actors, fire dancers, and aspiring rock stars have all donned Lisa's custom costumes.

A dedicated artisan and entrepreneur, Lisa began exploring other mediums that are similar to chainmail in their construction, such as knitting, crocheting, and braiding with wire and chain. Her first jewelry was designed with the intention of making her work more accessible. The premier Steel Couture collection developed an immediate following and was carried in fashionable boutiques around New York.

In subsequent years, Steel Couture was featured in Daily Candy, Lucky, and Nylon, and the line is now distributed at boutiques nationwide. Brooklyn's creative fashion scene and industrial surroundings serve as constant inspiration. The current Steel Couture collection expands on what Lisa does best: hand assembled repetitions of rings and chain with an edgy, trendsetting vision.

Q6 Favorite cocktail and where to drink it?
Depending on my mood it could be raspberry leaf tea in bed, or a gin and tonic at Trash Bar.... (or should I say 6 gin and tonics?)

Q7 If you could rewrite your history a bit and take on a totally different career or lifestyle, what would it be and why?
I actually live quite simply and frugally.... I hope someday to leave the city and often day dream about living in a log cabin and having some chickens in upstate NY. But I love to create and craft with my hands; I used to make really intricate one-of-a-kind pieces, I can see maybe going back to that in the future.

Q8 What is your favorite cuisine? Could you tell us a good restaurant in your area?
Oh, I'm so spoiled in Williamsburg, it's like around the world in 30 days. We are big Thai, Sushi, Indian fans. But we also like simple home-cooked meals too. Much easier on the waistline.
