Q1 How did you get into a jewelry design? Where did you study and what was your major specialization?
I fell into jewelry unintentionally. A friend of a friend was a designer and it sparked my interest. She showed me the basics and from there I started taking classes in Beverly Hills to learn more. After 2 years or so I decided to go to GIA to learn about diamonds and gemstones. I never studied design per se, I feel that is something that comes from your soul and can not be taught. It is important to study and understand the physics of design though so you know what you are doing and that the jewelry functions they way it is intended.

Q2 Do you usually wear jewelry? What are you wearing right now?
I do usually wear jewelry but I don't over accessorize. Just a piece or two. Right now im wearing my Tree of Life ring with emeralds and diamonds.

Q3 You have created many red carpet looks for A-list celebrities like Sandra Bullock. What is your goal when working with a celebrity client?
To make them feel pretty and put together. If they are happy and they appreciate what they are wearing then you've done your job. I want them to feel like they are wearing something that make them feel special, as I do everybody actually.

Q4 How do you decide on a theme for a collection?
Whatever is making me happy at the moment. For example, if I find myself spending a lot of time in nature ill design a nature themed collection. if I find myself in a period where I'm in awe of the of the universe and the mysticism behind it ill design many pieces that are reflective of the sun, moon and stars such as the Tahitian pearl galaxy earrings with diamond briolettes, or the blue Peruvian opal ring surrounded with diamond stars.

Susan Foster is a jeweler, not by any great accident, but by a great destiny. "The most important thing I contribute to my designs and jewelry is the good and pure intention behind it. My wish is that when someone wears a piece of my jewelry they feel special, unique, and sexy."

When you meet her and see her jewelry, her one-of-a-kind pieces, you can see that Susan Foster has put her soul into each jewel. Foster explains how every precious item in her line is customized. She creates the concept and design for each special ornament and then casts the piece in a distinctive 22-karat gold color, which has become her signature. A secret recipe gives a muted, ancient feel to the jewelry which creates an almost heirloom type feel, with a contemporary and edgy twist. Each link in her chains are then hand-hammered and assembled, as if it was ancient Egypt in the time of the great Pharaohs. If you look closely and hold the jewelry you can see and feel its magic, and understand that the designer puts forth gratitude and love into her art. Because her work is inspired by nature and different cultures and religions, a mystical element reigns supreme, and you may think you purchased Susan Foster's striking creations while trekking though an exotic, wondrous land. Indeed, Susan Foster Jewelry has quickly gained a fan base among Hollywood's elite. Foster's jewelry graces the necks of many including Maria Shriver, Sandra Bullock, Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Renee Zellweger, Lisa Kudrow, Rita Wilson, Angela Bassett, Minnie Driver, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Jane Kaczmarek, Lucy Lui, Tipper Gore, Amber Tamblyn, Anne Heche, Catherine Bell, Elizabeth Shue, Joey Lauren-Adams, Gretchen Mol, and Jessica Biel to name a few, as well as a multitude of Fashion Magazine editors. Foster's jewels can be found at high-end jewelry stores around the country such as Bergdorf Goodman in NYC, Kaviar and Kind in Hollywood, Savannah in Santa Monica, Sabbia in Chicago, Theodore in Brentwood, Malibu Rock Star in Malibu, and Vertu in Denver, Foster and her collection have been on numerous magazine covers such as Elle, InStyle, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Modern Bride and has been featured in Vogue, US, InTouch, Lucky, InStyle and many others worldwide.
