Q1 Could you tell us what made you decide to be a musician?
When I was 4 or 5 years old, I saw a video of Richie Havens performing "Motherless Child" at Woodstock. I remember being mesmerized with how fast his hands were strumming the guitar, and how exciting it was to hear and watch and feel his rhythm and powerful emotion. I will never forget that memory. I remember thinking, I want a guitar, I want to sing, and I want to play really fast and rhythmically and make noise like that!
Q2 How would you describe your music?
Boisterous, passionate, sensitive, quirky, and rhythmic!
Q3 What inspires you to create a song?
I just love doing it! It is really the most wonderful feeling I can describe to create and write songs and feel my hands playing guitar! It is just such a natural high! It is fun fun fun, and so therapeutic. |

Q4 Tell us about your album, "Bunnies & Bombs"? Is there any concept behind it?
"Bunnies and Bombs" is about juxtaposition. Just like the name "The Happy Hollows" is a meeting of opposites, a contradiction. The album has sounds of sweet bunnies as well as sounds of deadly bombs. Also, when we recorded the EP, we had only been a band for a couple of months, so we wrote a batch of simple songs and recorded them over a weekend. We only wanted to record so that we could have a demo CD in order to play live shows at clubs. We had no expectations at all for it, and we were shocked that people ended up liking it! We had friends come out of the woodwork who wanted to do videos for all the songs. To our surprise, we have gotten so much out of it!
Q5 What venue do you feel the best to play your music? Any favorite venues?
The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA! Or a house party! |

| The Happy Hollows is a raucous three piece indie-rock trio from Los Angeles that play fast and irreverent noise-pop. The band writes melodic and quirky songs with odd arrangements. Among other things, the subjects of their tunes include Vietnam flashbacks, palindromes, the colors of the rainbow, labyrinths, time travel, mythical animals, and Tarot cards. The group is fronted by Sarah Negahdari (vocals/guitar) and held together by the rhythm section of Charlie Mahoney (bass/vocals) and Chris Hernandez (drums/vocals). The L.A. Times has described their sound as a "pugilistic mix of stinging guitars, turbulent rhythms, and shouted vocals" that "alternates between childlike experimentation and ferocious firestorm." AllMusic wrote that the band's "appeal is immediate" and the Rock Insider Blog has characterized their live show as "explosive". Nylon Magazine described their sound as "lo-fi distortion" mixed with "Kim Deal-esque vocals and racing rhythms." In 2007, the video for their song "Vietnam" was selected as an editor's pick on YouTube. L.A. radio station Indie 103.1 selected the video as one of the top 10 local videos of 2007. Their debut EP, "Bunnies and Bombs" (2006), was played on numerous radio stations including Indie 103.1, KROQ, KXLU (Los Angeles), KUSF (San Francisco), KUCI (Irvine), KSPC (Claremont), KUCR (Riverside), and KDST (San Diego), as well as internet radio stations including Bagel Radio, Spacelab.TV, KillRadio.org, musicnerve.com, UsedWigs.com, and UCLAradio.com. The band has performed live on Indie 103.1, KXLU, and KUCI. |

Q6 Would you tell us about you're new album that is being produced by Dave Newton?
I wanted to write songs that were more developed and complex instrumentally, but that still had catchy melodies. I have also become a better guitarist since the first EP and I wanted to use all of the guitar techniques that I love, like finger picking and finger tapping, in the new songs. Musically the whole band has improved by leaps and bounds, but we still love creating catchy melody lines. Charlie, our bassist, wrote more songs as well this time around!
Q7 Do you have any mentors and if so, who are they?
Oh yes, I have many mentors. I love Pete Townsend. He is my hero and I love his music and his guitar style. Plus I look like the daughter he never had! I also love Tori Amos because she is so outrageous and a genius. I also love Bonnie Raitt because she was the first woman I saw play guitar like a badass. Patti Smith is a goddess. I also worship Dolly Parton! |

Q8 What do you usually do before the show starts?
During the day I watch YouTube clips of Pete Townsend and, if I have time I watch funny movies so that I can lighten up. Right before the show I drink a half pint of beer before I go on stage.
Q9 Music to live by?
I live by the music made by a lot of Los Angeles bands. Lately, my favorite band is Death to Anders. |
